"Formula 1" Play Structure
A compact play object designed to bring the thrilling aesthetic of open-wheel motorsport to modern playgrounds. This project scales down the iconic silhouette of a Formula 1 racing car into a safe, sustainable, and interactive wooden structure.
1. The Brief & Client Vision
The client's core ambition was to create an immersive play landmark that would make children's eyes light up with the excitement of being inside a real racing car.
Since a proper interpretation of a wooden Formula 1 car did not exist on the market, the project started from a blank canvas.
Operating under strict physical size restrictions provided by the client, the challenge was to convert real aggressive aerodynamics into safe, welcoming playground facility shape.
2. Conceptual Design & Styling
The design pipeline utilized a fluid workflow of hand-drawn exploratory sketches and advanced visualization tools to rapidly iterate form variations. This approach allowed for fast prototyping of the vehicle’s main design highlights—such as the structural overlapping wheel segments and the nose cone—ensuring swift client feedback and an accelerated approval process.
3. Immersive Interactive Features
The cockpit is engineered to make an easy imagine and role-play scenarios, where young drivers feel themselves behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. It features a highly detailed tactile steering wheel and an integrated mechanical gear shifter.
To collaborative play, a custom-designed race track panel includes almost real little cars that fit comfortably in the hand and allow kids to race around, allowing friends to race each other and interact simultaneously.
4. CAD Engineering & EN 1176 Compliance
Styling was impossible without the simultaneous engineering of the construction and the production process. In a clever integration of form and function, the 8 vertical "engine cylinders" double as structural load-bearing pillars that interface directly with the recessed concrete foundation. As a result, all structural components are rigidly mounted onto these "engine cylinders" and onto a heavy-duty platform supported by hidden supports.
The entire structure strictly respects EN 1176 safety regulations, featuring optimized impact zones and the complete elimination of head or finger entrapment risks.
5. Project Delivery
The finalized design successfully meets every constraint of the technical brief, seamlessly integrating rich tactile play activities within the strict of size limits. The result is an instantly recognizable racing vehicle optimized for modern urban playground.
Project Status: Approved by the client, currently undergoing final production engineering and optimization for manufacturing.
